An Introduction

The world population is increasing day by day. More food will be needed to feed the increasing population. If traditional farming practices continue, we may not be able to fulfil the increasing demand. A potential solution to meet demand would be vertical farming which takes advantage of empty vertical space. Instead of having a single layer of crops over a large land area, vertical farming has stacks of crops growing upwards. It grows leafy greens in stacked rows that reach to the ceiling without the need for natural sunlight or soil. The grow time through vertical farming is normally half of that by traditional farming.

Plants need a lot of light for photosynthesis. The vertical farming uses LED lights which are not only very efficient at plan growth, but also allow farmers to control growth through light settings.

Industry Background

Aeroponics is a technological leap forward from traditional hydroponics. It is a way of growing plants without soil and with very little water. Plants can be grown vertically or horizontally using this method. It uses both water and air to produce more colorful, better tasting, better smelling, and incredibly nutritious vegetables. Aeroponics vertical farming grows plants without soil.  The roots are suspended and sprayed with water and nutrient solution. This process can save water because the nutrient mix is fully recycled within the aeroponics systems design.

Company Background

The F.A.R.M. is a Las Vegas-based company that specializes in vertical farming and related technology. The founder of this company is Alaric Overbey. His vision for his company includes better food security, reduction of food deserts (difficult to buy fresh produce) and sustainability education for kids in the food challenged areas. The main goal of this company is to educate people about vertical farming and increase public awareness about what they are eating. The F.A.R.M. is consistently working to eliminate food deserts and provide for the less fortunate communities through a hands on vertical farming experience. The company is always ready to accept the challenges of food equality by improving the living standards through innovation, technology, and high-end produce.

Partners and Projects

A very special thank you to Joshi and Associates for their historic vision for Las Vegas. Together we will usher in a experienced unlike any other in Las Vegas.  L.I.V.E.  at NEONOPOLIS will be the first vertical farm of it’s kind in the world.

In October 2018, The F.A.R.M.™ was able to secure a 625 square foot space in Neonopolis in downtown Las Vegas, a 250,000 square foot shopping mall, a $100 million entertainment complex located on top of a $15 million city parking garage. The F.A.R.M.™ is creating the first beta “grocery farm” model in the world where the farm and the grocery store become one in the same. Being positioned in an area where over 4 million people visit, all have an opportunity to see the display while passing by. A launch date is scheduled for January 2019.

Together with Professor Shane Epting and 12 philosophy of engineering interns will embark on a revolutionary and innovative and sustainable turn-key vertical farm system.  This system will be a scalable design for any environment to start growing in immediate response to need and demand of fresh food anywhere in the world. This project will stimulate and display the need to continue these projects and training in order to assist in the ushering of the next generation to feed the world in the 21st century.

Together with University of Texas at Dallas and the Master of Accountant Interns and the GOGreen Project we conducted the first feasibility study for a vertical farm at a zoo. There is only one in the world. We will build the second vertical farm designed to grow food specifically for zoo animals.  This will allow more control of feeding animals from the around the world that which is most closely associated with the quality of what is in their natural habitat.

This will all cut the zoo 1 million dollar produce budget down to a quarter of that while being sustainable, LEED certified, and beyond organic.  This will also create an additional revenue stream in zoo and agritourism.
